Vietnam has underscored its pivotal role in fostering collaboration between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia, following the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue between the two entities. The Vietnamese delegation, led by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, played a key role in promoting ASEAN’s centrality and bolstering efforts to enhance its strategic partnership with Russia, according to Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung.
Throughout the summit, Vietnam advocated for dialogue and cooperation, emphasizing the peaceful resolution of disputes and adherence to international law. The country also advanced proposals to expand cooperation in critical areas such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These discussions resulted in the adoption of new frameworks designed to fortify ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a primary focus of this partnership.
In a significant announcement, Vietnam revealed its intention to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, a move that signals its ongoing commitment to nurturing future regional cooperation. This event aims to engage emerging diplomatic leaders and foster deeper ties between ASEAN member states and Russia.
On the fringes of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to reaffirm their mutual dedication to advancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The discussions between the two leaders concentrated on broadening cooperation across several sectors, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam expressed confidence that the summit’s outcomes will not only enhance ASEAN–Russia relations but also contribute to regional stability and create new opportunities for economic growth and cooperation across Eurasia. The strengthened partnership is expected to play a crucial role in addressing regional challenges and harnessing economic potential.
