Vietnam and Switzerland are set to deepen their Comprehensive Partnership, focusing on enhancing trade, investment, and cooperation in scientific research, digital finance, and sustainable development. This development follows the official visit of Swiss President Guy Parmelin to Vietnam, which coincided with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
During the visit, leaders from both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening political dialogue, economic ties, and collaboration through international institutions. A significant outcome of the discussions was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Switzerland is a member. This agreement is poised to improve market access, bolster business expansion, and foster stronger trade and investment opportunities once implemented.
The partnership aims to boost bilateral trade, which exceeded $1 billion in 2025, and to encourage Swiss investment in Vietnam. Key sectors identified for collaboration include green finance, digital technology, infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and workforce development. Additionally, both nations have pinpointed opportunities for joint research and technology transfer in areas such as biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy.
The countries plan to enhance educational partnerships and exchanges, involving experts, researchers, and students, leveraging Switzerland’s expertise in education and scientific research. Cooperation between government institutions, universities, and businesses is expected to support innovation and the commercial application of research findings.
Vietnam and Switzerland have also reiterated their support for sustainable development, free trade, multilateral cooperation, and a rules-based international order. Both nations express confidence that these strengthened ties will not only benefit their respective economies but also contribute to regional and global stability.
