The recent transfer of Chinese tanks to Cambodia has raised concerns in Thailand, with officials expressing fears that it might destabilize the delicate ceasefire between the two nations, which have seen tensions flare over border disputes. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the issue during a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlighting the potential complications this military delivery could introduce to the already fragile relationship between Thailand and Cambodia. Despite multiple ceasefire agreements, the situation remains volatile.
According to Thailand’s foreign ministry, the military shipment involved 39 Chinese-made T-59D battle tanks arriving in Cambodia as part of an existing military cooperation agreement. Thai authorities have noted that there is no evidence of these tanks being stationed near the contentious border area. The historical animosity between the two Southeast Asian neighbors stems from disagreements over land and maritime boundaries, disputes that are deeply rooted in colonial-era treaties and maps.
China has asserted that its defense collaborations with both Thailand and Cambodia are standard and not directed against any third party. Earlier this year, China also supplied Cambodia with a Type 056 guided-missile corvette, which further underscores its military support to the region. While Beijing emphasizes neutrality, the timing and optics of these transactions have nonetheless stirred unease in Thailand.
Despite these concerns, Thai officials have expressed appreciation for China’s impartial stance and its attempts to mediate the tension between the two countries. However, they insist that the resolution of the conflict lies in direct negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia. Both countries are encouraged to reach a peaceful settlement through dialogue.
In addition to the border issues, Thailand and China have agreed to initiate a new dialogue mechanism that will involve their foreign and defense ministers. This initiative aims to tackle various challenges, with the first round of discussions set to address the issue of cross-border scam operations. This collaborative effort highlights a commitment to maintaining regional stability while addressing mutual concerns beyond the immediate military tensions.
