Vietnam, Singapore Boost Economic Ties and Technology Collaboration

Date:

Việt Nam and Singapore are intensifying efforts to fortify their political trust and broaden strategic collaboration, focusing on advancements in technology, innovation, and sustainable development. As Vietnamese leader Tô Lâm prepares for a state visit to Singapore from May 29 to 31, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyễn Mạnh Cường highlighted the evolution of bilateral relations. These ties have progressed beyond traditional economic interactions, gravitating towards future-oriented sectors that promise long-term growth and integration within the ASEAN region.

The elevation of the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership set for 2025 underscores the deepening political trust and shared strategic priorities between the two nations. Singapore stands as one of Việt Nam’s key economic partners, being its second-largest foreign investor. The country has numerous active projects in diverse areas such as manufacturing, infrastructure, logistics, finance, real estate, and high technology.

A prominent example of this collaboration is the Việt Nam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) network, which is evolving to incorporate greener and smarter industrial practices in line with sustainable development objectives. The two nations are also expanding their cooperation in cutting-edge sectors like artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology, big data, clean energy, digital transformation, and green transition initiatives. Efforts are underway to link innovation ecosystems, technology companies, and skilled professionals in both countries.

Economic cooperation is anticipated to be a primary focus during Tô Lâm’s visit, alongside efforts to enhance collaboration in finance, trade, supply chains, and technology development. Initiatives such as “Tech Connect” aim to forge stronger connections between governments, academic institutions, research bodies, and private enterprises in fields including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and green technology. This visit is also expected to bolster the development of the next generation of sustainable and high-tech VSIP projects across Việt Nam.

In addition to these economic discussions, Tô Lâm is set to deliver a keynote speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, a prominent security forum in the region. Vietnamese officials view this invitation as an acknowledgment of Việt Nam’s expanding role on the international stage and its commitment to peace, cooperation, and maintaining strategic autonomy.
