During a meeting in Hà Nội on September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing committed to enhancing their countries’ bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in various sectors. This visit marked Min Aung Hlaing’s first trip to Vietnam since assuming his presidential duties. Prime Minister Hưng expressed Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s initiatives aimed at achieving stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth. Meanwhile, President Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam’s socio-economic advancements and its rising influence on the regional and international stage, expressing a keen interest in drawing lessons from Vietnam’s developmental journey.
The meeting underscored the importance of recent advancements in the relationship between the two nations, with both leaders agreeing on the necessity of increasing high-level exchanges to bolster political trust. They emphasized the need to revive essential cooperation mechanisms that encompass areas such as trade, security, and defense. A significant aspect of their discussions centered around defense and security, with plans to enhance joint efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. They also aimed to broaden military training programs, facilitate exchanges among young officers, and tackle non-traditional security challenges collaboratively.
Economic collaboration emerged as a pivotal theme, with both leaders exploring avenues to boost trade and update existing agreements on trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar extended an invitation to Vietnamese enterprises to invest in sectors including telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure development. The discussions also touched on improving infrastructure and air connectivity, with a shared interest in restoring direct flights and launching joint tourism ventures, such as spiritual and medical tourism initiatives.
On the regional front, Vietnam reiterated its commitment to working alongside ASEAN members to sustain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both leaders emphasized the importance of resolving disputes peacefully through adherence to international law. As a gesture of continued cooperation, Prime Minister Hưng invited President Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit, both scheduled to take place in Hà Nội in November 2026. In return, the Myanmar president extended an invitation to the Vietnamese prime minister to visit Myanmar at a mutually agreeable time.
