Singapore and Thailand Boost Economic Partnership Before ASEAN Leadership Roles

Date:

Singapore and Thailand have set the stage for enhanced bilateral and regional partnerships as they gear up to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in successive years—Singapore in 2027, followed by Thailand in 2028. This strategic alignment was a focal point during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held in Bangkok on September 2. This marked the first such meeting between Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and it was also the first bilateral retreat between the two nations in over a decade.

During the discussions, the leaders emphasized the strength of their bilateral relationship and committed to developing a comprehensive multi-year agenda to ensure seamless continuity in ASEAN leadership. They outlined plans to bolster cooperation across various sectors, including artificial intelligence, digital transformation, the green economy, energy resilience, and food security. Additional areas of collaboration include enhancing connectivity, defense, security, and efforts to combat transnational crime. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to upholding a rules-based international order and advancing ASEAN’s regional integration.

Energy cooperation emerged as a key priority, with both nations supporting significant initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This project is particularly notable as it facilitates the import of renewable hydropower from Laos to Singapore via Thailand and Malaysia, exemplifying a regional effort toward sustainable energy solutions.

In addition to energy and economic matters, the leaders were present at the signing of a memorandum of understanding focused on social sector development. This agreement aims to foster the exchange of knowledge and research on social welfare policies, promoting collaboration between relevant institutions in both countries.

The economic ties between Singapore and Thailand continue to be robust, underlined by a bilateral trade volume of approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Notably, Singapore has maintained its position as Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three years running, highlighting the strong economic interdependence between the two nations.
