In a significant diplomatic development, Thailand and France have agreed to enhance their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership following official discussions between Anutin Charnvirakul and Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The talks, held at the Élysée Palace, concentrated on expanding cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, cybersecurity, and advanced technology. Both leaders also took the opportunity to assess regional issues, particularly those concerning Cambodia and Myanmar.
The dialogue led to an agreement to bolster collaboration in key industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its commitment to supporting the conclusion of the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement negotiations, which are set to wrap up this year. These talks, initially commenced in 2013, faced suspension in 2014 but were revived in 2023. Thai authorities have noted that the agreement is poised to unlock substantial economic prospects for both nations.
Further, Thailand and France committed to intensifying their defense and cybersecurity cooperation, addressing challenges such as cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. On the regional front, Thailand reaffirmed its dedication to resolving border disputes with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law frameworks. This comprehensive approach underscores the mutual interest in maintaining regional stability and security.
The two governments are set to implement the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership from 2026 to 2028, which will pave the way for formalizing a strategic partnership. During his visit, Anutin engaged with executives from leading French companies like Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group to promote additional investment in Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech and future industries. French business leaders expressed optimism about the investment landscape in Thailand, with Airbus announcing plans to expand its aviation and engineering footprint in the country.
