Ceasefire Won’t Influence Economic Claims on Cambodia-Thailand Border Region

Date:

The longstanding border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand has seen a temporary resolution with both nations agreeing to a ceasefire. This agreement, effective from December 27, aims to maintain current military positions while addressing the humanitarian impact of the conflict, which displaced more than 20,000 people. Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain as both countries continue to claim ownership of contested areas.

Cambodia has emphasized that the ceasefire should not be interpreted as a step towards establishing a new international border. Cambodian Information Minister Neth Pheaktra stated that the agreement does not affect the eventual determination of the border’s legal status. Instead, Cambodia insists that the ceasefire’s primary goal is to facilitate the safe return of displaced civilians.

However, friction persists as Cambodia accuses Thai forces of fortifying their positions in disputed territories. According to Pheaktra, Thailand has undertaken activities such as installing barbed wire, constructing roads, and building military facilities, actions that Cambodia views as creating new facts on the ground rather than preserving the status quo.

In response, Thailand has been proactive in demonstrating its claims to foreign delegates, ASEAN observers, and international journalists by organizing visits to key areas along the border. These include the O’Smach casino area and the Choam crossing, where Thailand has raised concerns about the use of casino buildings and alleged cross-border criminal activities. Cambodia, however, refutes Thailand’s control over these areas, maintaining that they fall within Cambodian territory.

As both nations navigate this delicate situation, the focus remains on upholding the ceasefire and ensuring the well-being of affected civilians. The international community continues to watch closely as Cambodia and Thailand work towards a more permanent resolution of their border dispute.
