Vietnam’s To Lam Advocates for Economic Cooperation, Trust at UN Gathering.

Date:

Amidst growing global challenges and geopolitical tensions, the call for enhanced international cooperation and adherence to international law has become more pressing. Vietnam’s General Secretary and President, To Lam, addressed these concerns during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, highlighting the need for rebuilding trust among nations and reinforcing the United Nations’ pivotal role.

In his address, To Lam outlined four key priorities aimed at navigating global changes effectively. He stressed the importance of restoring trust through the principles of the UN Charter and international law, advocating for inclusive and sustainable development, responsible governance of emerging technologies, and strengthening the United Nations’ central role in global affairs.

To Lam emphasized the necessity for countries to engage in dialogue to manage differences, prevent conflicts, and uphold national sovereignty and territorial integrity. He underscored the importance of protecting civilians and respecting international humanitarian law during conflicts, which remains a crucial aspect of global peacekeeping efforts.

On the topic of technology, To Lam pointed out that advances in artificial intelligence and digital transformation should work towards bridging development gaps rather than widening disparities. He called for a governance model for technology that is inclusive, transparent, and accountable, with a greater role for developing countries in establishing international norms.

Reaffirming Vietnam’s commitment to multilateralism, To Lam expressed support for United Nations reforms, including changes to the General Assembly, Security Council, and Secretariat, to better serve the interests of developing nations. In regional matters, he reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law, further highlighting the country’s active participation in ASEAN cooperation and UN peacekeeping missions.
