In a major move to enhance its global food delivery reach, Uber Technologies is set to acquire the German company Delivery Hero for $14.8 billion. This strategic acquisition will expand Uber’s presence to 50 international markets, marking a significant development in the food delivery sector.
According to the terms of the deal, Uber will purchase Delivery Hero’s core global operations at a price of €41.50 per share, which translates to $47.60. Additionally, Uber will take over shares held by the prominent investor Prosus, further consolidating its ownership stake. This acquisition aligns with the broader industry trend of consolidation, as companies seek to strengthen their positions following the rapid growth experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The transaction also involves investment firm SSW Partners, which will acquire operations in 14 markets for a sum of around $1.6 billion. These markets include Austria, Norway, Spain, and Sweden, and SSW plans to divest these assets separately. This component of the deal reflects a strategic approach to optimizing asset management and gaining competitive advantages in various regions.
In recent years, Uber has been actively pursuing strategies to expand its footprint overseas, navigating a competitive landscape where other major players are also vying for dominance. Delivery Hero had been under pressure from investors to restructure and consider asset sales, leading to a strategic review. This acquisition by Uber comes as part of a broader industry shift towards mergers and acquisitions as companies look to solidify their international influence.
The deal is anticipated to significantly bolster Uber’s position in the global food delivery market, providing it with a stronger footing to navigate the increasingly competitive environment. As the sector continues to evolve, companies like Uber are leveraging acquisitions to adapt to market demands and sustain growth trajectories established during the pandemic era.
