Vietnam and Norway Enhance Trade and Renewable Energy Ties with New Agreements

Date:

Vietnam and Norway are set to enhance their bilateral cooperation in key sectors such as trade, renewable energy, and maritime development, as they prepare to celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026. The announcement follows a meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål, where both officials committed to strengthening economic and diplomatic ties.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the progress towards a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the member states of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Norway. Having concluded 14 years of negotiations, the agreement promises to improve market access, foster business partnerships, and offer greater certainty for investors. Deputy Foreign Minister Hang emphasized the need for all parties to complete ratification procedures to pave the way for implementation.

The discussions also highlighted the potential of the Green Strategic Partnership, an agreement signed in April between the two nations. This partnership aims to facilitate sustainable development and support the transition to cleaner energy. Vietnam has encouraged Norwegian businesses and financial institutions to increase investments in renewable energy, maritime transport, shipbuilding, port infrastructure, logistics, and high-tech aquaculture.

Norway expressed its interest in expanding cooperation in marine management, sustainable aquaculture, green shipping, and the circular economy. Both countries agreed to collaborate on sharing technology and expertise to advance carbon neutrality and enhance energy security.

Regional cooperation was another focal point, with Vietnam and Norway agreeing to work more closely within the ASEAN-Norway partnership for the period 2026-2030. Their collaboration will focus on the blue economy, energy transition, connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development.

Moreover, the two countries pledged to strengthen coordination between their foreign ministries and support each other in regional and international forums, including the United Nations. They reaffirmed their commitment to principles of free trade, international law, and adherence to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The meeting underscored the shared commitment of Vietnam and Norway to expanding economic opportunities, strengthening diplomatic relations, and advancing sustainable development, setting a positive trajectory for their partnership in the coming years.
