Vietnam has reiterated its commitment to strengthening its strategic relationship with Laos, with a focus on boosting economic ties and infrastructure connectivity. During a meeting in Hanoi on Wednesday, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Vilay Lakhamfong, a senior official of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, discussed enhancing the effectiveness of bilateral agreements and translating high-level commitments into practical projects.
Prime Minister Hưng emphasized Vietnam’s support for Laos’ national development and identified opportunities to expand cooperation in key areas such as trade, investment, defense, security, education, science, technology, and tourism. He highlighted the need for closer coordination on regional and international issues through platforms like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Nations.
The Vietnamese leader called for the acceleration of major infrastructure projects, including the Hanoi–Vientiane expressway and the Vientiane–Vung Ang railway, along with initiatives to enhance energy connectivity. He also underscored the importance of progressing on the proposed Laos–Vietnam Friendship University to foster educational ties.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the Vietnam–Laos Cooperation Strategy for 2021–2030 and the bilateral governmental cooperation agreement for 2026–2030. The leaders stressed the importance of regular high-level exchanges and closer collaboration between ministries, local authorities, and businesses to solidify their partnership.
Looking ahead, the two sides are preparing for significant milestones in 2027, which marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam–Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. Planned activities for the Vietnam–Laos Year of Friendship and Strategic Cohesion 2027 aim to celebrate the historic ties and engage younger generations in both countries.
Vilay Lakhamfong expressed gratitude for Vietnam’s ongoing support for Laos’ development and reaffirmed his country’s dedication to preserving the bilateral relationship. He also highlighted the importance of continued cooperation on regional security, stability, and economic development, expressing confidence that their partnership would strengthen political trust and contribute to peace and stability in the region.
