Vietnam’s international engagement efforts received a significant boost following General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President Tô Lâm’s recent visit to the United States and Canada. Taking place from September 20 to 25, this five-day trip aimed to strengthen Vietnam’s global position and expand bilateral cooperation opportunities.

During the visit, Tô Lâm participated in the high-level General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly session, marking his inaugural appearance at the UN in his current leadership role. He outlined Vietnam’s development priorities and foreign policy direction, emphasizing the country’s commitment to addressing global and regional challenges. His UN address called for enhanced multilateral cooperation and a more significant role for the UN in tackling international issues.

In addition to his UN engagement, Tô Lâm’s visit included meetings with senior officials, lawmakers, business leaders, academics, and Vietnamese communities in both the US and Canada. Discussions with US counterparts focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring mutual interests such as trade and investment.

In Canada, the visit culminated in an agreement to elevate the bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, supported by a comprehensive action plan covering various cooperation areas. This new partnership underscores a commitment to deepening ties across sectors like trade, technology, education, energy, and transport.

Vietnamese officials and businesses also engaged with partners in the US and Canada, resulting in several agreements encompassing trade, investment, technology, and other strategic areas. These collaborations highlight the potential for significant future growth and cooperation.

Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung highlighted the importance of implementing the commitments made during the trip. He pointed to areas such as science and technology, trade, investment, defense and security, energy, and education as key sectors for enhanced collaboration. Notably, nuclear energy cooperation was identified as a promising area for expanded partnership.
