Vietnam’s Education Material Shortages Prompt Government Action on Economic Impact

Date:

Efforts to bridge educational disparities in Vietnam are underway as the government enhances infrastructure in remote border areas. The initiative, guided by Politburo Resolution 71-NQ/TW, aims to improve access to education in disadvantaged regions through the establishment of multi-level boarding schools. Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng has underscored the urgency of this mission, directing the Ministry of Education and Training to expedite the completion of these facilities.

During a meeting in Hà Nội, Prime Minister Hưng emphasized the need for swift action on unfinished projects at 108 newly opened schools and set a target for the construction of an additional 121 schools by August 30, 2027. These efforts are part of a broader plan involving 248 schools across border communes, aimed at reducing educational inequalities.

The Prime Minister also called on authorities to assess the effectiveness and educational quality of these institutions, ensuring they are equipped with adequate resources, including classrooms and teaching staff. Proper use of enrolment data is encouraged to guide future education facility planning.

Amid these developments, the Prime Minister addressed a pressing issue affecting students nationwide—a textbook shortage. With around 776,000 textbook sets lacking, Hưng attributed this to inefficiencies in forecasting demand, as well as issues in ordering, publishing, and distribution processes. He instructed the ministry to identify those responsible and report their findings by October 10.

In response to the textbook crisis, Hưng called for increased diversification in production and distribution, alongside improved quality control measures, to ensure all students have the resources they need. The ministry has been tasked with preparing comprehensive reports for an upcoming review of the government’s progress under Resolution 71.
