Singapore-Brunei Strengthen Economic Ties and Business Collaboration in Lee’s Visit

In a move to bolster bilateral ties, Singapore Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong recently traveled to Brunei to partake in Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s 80th birthday celebrations. Both leaders used this occasion to reaffirm their dedication to enhancing cooperation between their nations. The visit was marked by discussions on significant upcoming anniversaries, notably the 50th anniversary of their defense collaboration in 2026 and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement in 2027.

The leaders’ dialogue extended to various sectors, with a focus on expanding collaboration in areas such as energy, food security, and supply chain resilience. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of fostering people-to-people exchanges to strengthen the connection between their citizens. These discussions underscored a shared vision for deepening and broadening the scope of interaction between Singapore and Brunei.

During his stay, Minister Lee also took the opportunity to engage with Brunei’s Crown Prince and other senior ministers. These meetings concentrated on initiatives aimed at nurturing ties between future leaders and the youth of both countries, reflecting a forward-looking approach to bilateral relations. The emphasis on youth engagement signals a strategic investment in the long-term partnership between the two nations.

Beyond diplomatic meetings, Lee’s visit included participation in official birthday events, underscoring the warm personal rapport between the two countries’ leaders. He also spent time with Singapore Armed Forces personnel who are undergoing training in Brunei, highlighting the defense relationship that has been a cornerstone of their partnership. Additionally, he visited a Singapore-operated aquaculture farm, symbolizing the collaboration in sustainable development and food security.
