At a recent mid-year meeting in Da Nang, Vietnam and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing joint efforts in various sectors as part of their 2026 cooperation plan. Officials from both nations evaluated the advancements achieved in the initial eight months of the year and mapped out strategic priorities to focus on for the rest of 2026. Key areas of collaboration include investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development, highlighting the strong bilateral ties between the two countries.
The economic partnership between Vietnam and Laos is showing significant growth. Vietnamese enterprises have initiated 20 new investment projects in Laos, amassing a total worth of $638.3 million in just the first seven months. Laos stands as Vietnam’s foremost destination for overseas investments, with nearly 300 projects backed by Vietnamese firms, amounting to over $7 billion.
Trade between the two countries has also been robust, with bilateral trade reaching around $1.3 billion in the first half of 2026. Both nations are progressing in sectors like energy, transportation, construction, and infrastructure connectivity, which are crucial for their economic development and regional integration.
Education and human resource development are pivotal aspects of the cooperation agenda. In 2026, Vietnam is supporting Lao students with 1,300 scholarships and has set aside $43 million in aid for Laos as part of a comprehensive assistance program stretching from 2026 to 2030. This reflects Vietnam’s commitment to fostering educational and developmental opportunities in Laos.
Furthermore, Vietnam and Laos have pledged to improve coordination on significant projects, tackle investment challenges, and enhance economic connections in the broader Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region. These efforts aim to fortify the economic landscape and facilitate sustainable growth across the region.
