Vietnam, Australia Aim to Boost Economic Ties Between Capital Cities

In a bid to enhance bilateral cooperation, Việt Nam and Australia’s Australian Capital Territory (ACT) have set the stage for closer ties between Hà Nội, Ho Chi Minh City, and Canberra. This development comes after productive discussions between Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Hùng Tâm and ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. The ambassador expressed optimism about Barr’s forthcoming visit to key Vietnamese cities, anticipating it would pave the way for new collaborative ventures.

Ambassador Tâm underscored the potential for partnerships in various sectors, notably renewable energy, innovation, education, tourism, and smart urban development. He put forward the idea of a formal friendship and cooperation agreement between Hà Nội and the ACT, which he believes would foster sustained collaboration across multiple areas.

Marking his inaugural visit to Việt Nam, Chief Minister Barr acknowledged the nation’s significance as an economic partner within the ACT’s international engagement framework. He showed enthusiasm for the proposed sister-city relationship with Hà Nội, pointing out the promising opportunities for joint efforts in green transition initiatives. These include advancements in electric transport and renewable energy projects, all aimed at supporting the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Barr also indicated his eagerness to engage in public diplomacy activities during potential visits by senior Vietnamese officials to Australia, reinforcing the commitment to building a strong and multifaceted partnership. The dialogue between Ambassador Tâm and Chief Minister Barr signals a mutual interest in leveraging both regions’ strengths to tackle global challenges and foster economic growth.
