Vietnam’s VNREDSat-1 satellite program has significantly advanced the nation’s collaboration with France in the sphere of space technology. Initiated with the launch of VNREDSat-1 on May 7, 2013, this project marked Vietnam’s debut in Earth observation satellites. Initially designed for a five-year mission, the satellite impressively continues to function in 2026, reflecting 14 years of operational service. The program has not only enhanced Vietnam’s satellite operation capabilities but also fostered deeper expertise in various technical domains.
A key component of this initiative was the intensive training provided to Vietnamese engineers between 2011 and 2013 in both France and Vietnam. This training equipped them with vital skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. Over time, these engineers have transitioned from relying on foreign procedures to independently resolving technical challenges, illustrating significant growth in local expertise. Furthermore, Vietnam has established a comprehensive remote-sensing system, which manages everything from imaging requests to data distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has delivered close to 30,000 satellite images, supporting efforts in environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, and national defense.
The President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Trần Hồng Thái, has highlighted the program’s role in laying a robust technical and human-resource groundwork for future satellite endeavors. However, he notes that achieving technological self-reliance will require advancements in satellite design and related technologies, such as payloads, electronics, and ground systems. This underscores Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its domestic capabilities in the space sector.
A new chapter of cooperation unfolded during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, a declaration of intent was signed between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies. This agreement aims to foster long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation, with a focus on developing a next-generation Earth observation system, potentially leading to the creation of VNREDSat-2.
Future collaborations are anticipated to emphasize greater Vietnamese involvement in various aspects of satellite missions, including planning, system design, and data applications. There is potential for Vietnam to enhance its expertise in areas like control software, remote-sensing image processing, and artificial intelligence. The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, thereby enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently design and manage future satellite technologies.
