Thailand, Cambodia Plan Economic Initiatives to Rebuild Mutual Business Trust

In a significant diplomatic engagement, leaders from Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines gathered for trilateral talks at the Shangri-La Mactan hotel in Cebu. The meeting, which took place at 6 p.m. local time in the Philippines, was attended by Thai Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The agenda centered on addressing the ongoing situation between Thailand and Cambodia.

The initiative for these discussions came from the Philippines, leveraging its role as the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). According to Rachada Dhanadirek, spokesperson for the Thai Prime Minister’s Office, this summit was designed to facilitate dialogue and cooperation among the neighboring nations.

Following the talks, a joint press conference was held. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., as the ASEAN chair, opened the session, followed by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Anutin expressed his gratitude to President Marcos for orchestrating the crucial dialogue, emphasizing the productive and forward-thinking nature of his exchange with Prime Minister Manet. He described the discussions as open and significant, highlighting the importance of continued dialogue and commitment to peace.

During the conference, Anutin underscored the deep connections between Thailand and Cambodia, noting their shared geographic and cultural ties. He pointed out that conflicts tend to result in losses for all parties involved, reinforcing the critical importance of maintaining peace. Reflecting on the discussions, he called for a renewed focus on cooperation and the opening of a new chapter in Thai-Cambodian relations.

Emphasizing the necessity for sincerity, good faith, and collective determination, Anutin advocated for both nations to overcome existing challenges and work collaboratively towards a peaceful future. This meeting symbolized a pivotal moment for Thailand and Cambodia, as they sought to reaffirm their commitment to peaceful dialogue and forge stronger bilateral ties.
